Abstract:
Building resiliency into bioregions, landscapes, and communities is a growing endeavor and one that deserves engaged community members who care about the future of their place. Not only do each bring their own sense of place based on their lived experience and associations there, they bring multiple senses of place, depending on the scale of question. Likewise, any given landscape planning and resiliency initiative will need to be considered not at a fixed scale, but through nested scalar lenses, triggering varying senses of place in the process. Yet a review of current literature suggests it may be more complex than that. Through a case study of a multi-scalar bioregional green infrastructure planning initiative, this chapter illustrates the complexity of, and potential for understanding sense of place and scale relationships. It concludes with nuanced implications for future landscape planning and resiliency applications.
